Understanding the Service

What Does Live-In Care Mean?

Live-in care is exactly what it sounds like — a professionally trained carer moves into the home of the person they are supporting, providing continuous, around-the-clock care and companionship.

Unlike visiting care, which covers specific hours of the day, live-in care means there is always someone there. For families worried about a loved one's safety overnight, or for individuals with complex or high-dependency needs, live-in care offers an unmatched level of reassurance and support.

Crucially, live-in care allows individuals to remain in the home they know and love — surrounded by their own possessions, their own routines, and the people most important to them. For many, this makes all the difference to their quality of life, their sense of identity, and their emotional wellbeing.

At Cornerstone Care Ltd, we approach live-in care with the same values that underpin everything we do: dignity, respect, person-centred thinking, and genuine compassion.

The Advantages

Why Families Choose Live-In Care

🏡

Stay in Your Own Home

Home is more than a building — it is identity, memory, and comfort. Live-in care allows individuals to remain exactly where they belong, surrounded by everything familiar.

🤝

One-to-One Dedicated Support

Your live-in carer is focused entirely on you — not split between multiple clients. This level of attention and continuity is simply not possible in a care home setting.

🔄

Consistent, Familiar Care

The same carer, day after day. This consistency is invaluable — building genuine trust, reducing anxiety, and creating a stable, predictable routine for the individual.

👨‍👩‍👧

Family Peace of Mind

Knowing a qualified, caring professional is present at all times — day and night — gives families the reassurance they need, however far away they may live.

🔧

Fully Flexible, Bespoke Care

Live-in care adapts completely to the individual. Their schedule, their preferences, their goals — the care plan is shaped around them, not around a standardised routine.

💷

A Cost-Effective Alternative

For those with complex or high-level needs, live-in care can be a more cost-effective option than a residential care home — with significantly better outcomes for wellbeing and independence.

Making the Decision

Live-In Care vs a Care Home — What Is the Difference?

Choosing between live-in care and a residential care home is one of the most significant decisions a family will face. Here is an honest comparison to help you decide what is right for your loved one.

Suitable For

Is Live-In Care Right for You or Your Loved One?

Individuals with High-Dependency Needs

Those who require support with multiple aspects of daily living — personal care, medication, meals, and mobility — throughout the day and night.

Those Recovering from Stroke, Surgery or Illness

A live-in carer provides intensive, consistent support during recovery — reducing hospital re-admission risk and accelerating rehabilitation in a familiar environment.

Individuals Living with Dementia

The familiar home environment is profoundly beneficial for those with dementia. A live-in carer maintains routine, monitors safety, and provides the reassurance of a known, trusted face.

Couples Where One or Both Partners Need Support

Live-in care keeps couples together in their own home — rather than separating them into different facilities. This is something a care home simply cannot offer.

Those Who Live Alone or Have No Nearby Family

For individuals without close family support, a live-in carer provides safety, companionship, and the reassurance of never being truly alone — day or night.

A Typical Day

What Does a Live-In Care Day Look Like?

Every day is different — shaped entirely by the preferences and routine of the individual. Here is an example of how a typical day might flow with a Cornerstone live-in carer.

7:30am

Morning Routine

The carer assists with washing, dressing, and oral hygiene at the individual's preferred pace. Breakfast is prepared to taste — no fixed menu, no rush.

9:30am

Medication & Morning Activity

Prescribed medication is administered and recorded. Morning activities — whether reading, gentle exercise, or enjoying the garden — are supported and encouraged.

12:30pm

Lunch Preparation

A nutritious, home-cooked meal is prepared to the individual's preferences. The carer joins them at the table, providing companionship and natural conversation.

2:30pm

Afternoon Outing or Rest

A walk, a community visit, or a quiet afternoon rest — the individual decides. The carer provides support, transport assistance, and company.

5:30pm

Evening Meal & Wind-Down

Dinner is prepared, medication administered, and the individual is supported with any evening personal care needs at their own pace.

9:00pm

Overnight Support

The carer is present through the night — either sleeping nearby and available if needed, or providing a fully alert waking night where required.

Questions Answered

Live-In Care — Frequently Asked Questions

The live-in carer requires their own bedroom within the home. They are entitled to breaks during the day and a continuous period of sleep at night, unless a waking night arrangement has been agreed. For those who need full overnight supervision, we can arrange waking night cover in addition to daytime live-in care.

A spare bedroom is a practical requirement for live-in care. If this is not possible, we can discuss alternative arrangements such as visiting care packages or overnight care that may better suit your situation.

We take matching very seriously. We consider personality, communication style, interests, language, cultural background, and care needs — to ensure the best possible fit. If the match is not right, we will find a replacement without hesitation.

We arrange cover. A relief carer — who is briefed on the individual's care plan — steps in to ensure continuity of care. Service users and families are always informed in advance.

Yes. Live-in carers provide support with light household tasks including meal preparation, laundry, washing up, and tidying — as agreed within the individual's care plan.

Yes. We provide live-in care for couples, including where one or both partners have care needs. This keeps couples together in their own home — which is something a care home is rarely able to offer.

Simply contact us by phone, email, or our online enquiry form. We will arrange a free, no-obligation home assessment and guide you through every step of the process.
